Medicare Rebates - Safety Nets Thresholds
Medicare Safety Nets have thresholds. When you spend a certain amount in out-of-pocket costs in a calendar year, you’ll reach the threshold. This is approximately $861.20/year for healthcare or pension card holders, or approximately $2699.10/year for all others. These amounts apply to individuals or to families if you have others registered with your Medicare safety net.
Once you’ve reached the threshold, you’ll start getting higher Medicare benefits. This means you’ll get more money back from Medicare for certain services - with a valid Medicare card and referral this includes most services such as medical consultations, infusions and allied health appointments at Specialists 331.
Only verified payments count towards the threshold. Verified payments are when you pay for your health professional service in full, before the Medicare claim is made.
The threshold amounts are set each year from 1 January.
